Whitney Elementary School is a very low income and economically challenged school with many needs for their students.

They would appreciate children's clothes for younger children when they get sick, have an accident, play to hard, and/or soil their clothes so they may finish the rest of the day at school clean. Often these items are not returned since they are really needed by the children,so a regular maintenance and supply needs to be stocked.

They are looking for underwear, socks and sweatpants, for boys and girls in sizees 5,6,7,8 or small , medium. Mittens, gloves, hats, scarves are appreciated in the winter months. New is appreciated but clean used items are welcome. If you are at the dollar store and ever see anything like that grab it – and also at the dollar store if you see packs of underwear, boys and girls – sizes 4 through 10 – but mostly the smaller sizes – 4, 6, etc. not toddlers. If you are in a thrift shop and can pick up a few items..your generosity will be appreciated.

Bed Nets

Hi Everyone,

I have written before about considering giving or asking for a gift of bed nets that protect children (and adults) from malaria. This is a reminder that the option of protecting people from malaria is still very important.

Last July, National Geographic featured a long article on the history of malaria. It pointed out that “Malaria is a plague of the poor, easy to overlook. The most unfortunate fact about malaria, some researchers believe, is that prosperous nations got rid of it.” Malaria is invisible to those of us in developed nations. It is easy to forget that it still exists. Another sobering set of statistics is, “This year malaria will strike up to a half billion people. At least a million will die, most of them under age five, the vast majority living in Africa. Please consider making gifts in honor of your friends and family via our team “A commitment to help.” You can even start your own team within the team if you would like. I am creating a post card that you can mail directly or put into a greeting card to tell friends and family that you have given nets in their honor. I will have some printed and will be happy to send them to you. Just let me know. If you would prefer, you can make your own certificate to honor your friends or just add a note in your cards.

We have learned a couple of things since starting this journey in January. One is that asking for or giving nets as gifts leaves both the giver and the receiver feeling great. All of us have so many things that a gift to someone who is has a compelling need is meaningful.
